Fishing

World-class fishing is here -- the Alabama Gulf Coast is rated top red snapper fishing in the world.  Just south of Gulf Shores Plantation is the famous 1,200 square-miles of artificial reefs in the Alabama Gulf Coast.  And mere feet from the entrance to Gulf Shores Plantation is a boat launching ramp on the Mobile Bay.  Excellent speckle trout, redfish, and cobia fishing awaits you.

Wildlife

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, called one of the 10 natural wonders of Alabama, is on the peninsular that Gulf Shores Plantation is on, literally minutes away.  Bon Secour consists of 6,200 acres of natural wildlife habitat in five separate parcels of land.  Over 400 species of birds have been identified and banded at the refuge during migratory seasons.  The largest are usually ospreys and several species of herons.  At the other extreme, seven species of hummingbirds have been identified.  Mammals such as alligators, red fox, wild boar, coyotes, and armadillos are also present.

History

American Indian settlements were in this area.  The Creek Indian War, which resulted in the Fort Mims massacre on August 30, 1813, occurred here.  The area was part of The Trail of Tears which occurred as a result of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 when the United States Government attempted to move all the five tribes of the Southeast to territory in the West.  The Five Civilized Tribes consisted of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole Indians.   Creek Indians were captured near Montgomery and were marched south to Mobile Bay, placed on boats, and moved west to New Orleans to the Mississippi River, Arkansas River, and then on to Oklahoma.

Fort Morgan was built on Mobile Bay in the years immediately following the War of 1812 when the newly formed United States government saw the need to continue protecting it's borders.  It played an important role in the Civil War.  It is open to the public and is ten miles west of Gulf Shores Plantation on Highway 180.
